Interest in non-toxic and eco-friendly cleaning products has grown significantly in Ontario over the last few years — and for good reason. Many conventional cleaning products contain chemicals linked to respiratory irritation, skin sensitivities, and longer-term health concerns. For families with young children, pets, or anyone with allergies or asthma, the contents of your cleaning cupboard matter.
But the honest concern most Aurora and Newmarket homeowners have about switching to eco-friendly products is simple: do they actually work? The answer is yes — with the right products and the right approach. Here's what actually performs.
The core natural cleaning ingredients that genuinely work
White distilled vinegar
White vinegar is one of the most effective natural cleaners available. Its acidity cuts through mineral deposits, soap scum, and light grease. It's excellent for descaling faucets and showerheads, cleaning glass and mirrors, deodorizing, and as a rinse aid in dishwashers.
Important caveat: do not use vinegar on natural stone surfaces (granite, marble, travertine) — the acid will etch and dull the finish over time. Also avoid using it on cast iron or waxed surfaces.
Baking soda
Baking soda is a mild abrasive that scrubs without scratching, and a powerful deodorizer. It works well on stovetop grime, sink discolouration, grout lines, and as a laundry booster. Mixed with a small amount of water to form a paste, it handles most kitchen scrubbing tasks effectively.
Castile soap
Castile soap — made from vegetable oils rather than synthetic detergents — is a genuinely effective all-purpose cleaner when diluted properly. It can clean floors, surfaces, dishes, and laundry. Dr. Bronner's is the most widely available castile soap in Ontario, found at most grocery stores and natural health retailers.
Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
The standard 3% hydrogen peroxide available at any Ontario pharmacy is an effective disinfectant for kitchen and bathroom surfaces. It kills bacteria and viruses and breaks down into water and oxygen — no harmful residue. It's particularly useful for disinfecting cutting boards, bathroom counters, and toilet surfaces.
Note: store hydrogen peroxide in a dark bottle, as light degrades its effectiveness. Don't mix it with vinegar in the same spray bottle.
Lemon juice
Lemon juice has mild antibacterial properties and cuts grease effectively. It's particularly useful for freshening the microwave (lemon-steam method), cleaning cutting boards, and lightening mineral stains on fixtures. Best used fresh rather than bottled for maximum effectiveness.

Plant-based cleaning products that work well in Ontario homes
Beyond the DIY staples, there's a solid range of commercially available plant-based cleaning products that perform well without the synthetic chemicals found in conventional cleaners. These are available at most Ontario grocery stores, Costco, and health food retailers:
- Method — widely available in Ontario, genuinely plant-based, strong all-purpose and bathroom cleaners
- Seventh Generation — US brand widely sold in Ontario; plant-based formulas for dishes, laundry, and surfaces
- Attitude — Canadian brand (Quebec-based), EWG-verified, excellent for families with young children or allergies
- Bio-Vert — Canadian brand, biodegradable, used by eco-cleaning professionals including several York Region companies
- PC Green (President's Choice) — budget-friendly plant-derived option available at Loblaws and Superstore
Where eco-friendly products sometimes fall short — and what to do
Being honest: there are situations where natural and plant-based cleaners work more slowly or require more effort than their synthetic counterparts. The main areas:
Heavy grease buildup: Plant-based degreasers work but may need a longer dwell time — spray and wait 5–10 minutes before wiping rather than spraying and immediately wiping.
Stubborn bathroom mildew: Hydrogen peroxide is effective, but heavy mould on grout may require a stronger intervention — a paste of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide applied and left for 30 minutes before scrubbing works well.
Very hard water mineral deposits: Aurora and Newmarket have moderately hard water. White vinegar handles most mineral deposits, but very thick buildup may need extended soak time — wrap fixtures in vinegar-soaked cloth and leave for a few hours.
Disinfection to hospital grade: For households with immunocompromised members or during illness, plant-based products may not meet the disinfection standard required. In these cases, a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution or an EPA/Health Canada-registered disinfectant is appropriate.
